Phi Phi to Phuket

The ferry to Phi Phi cost us 250 baht and took about an hour. We stayed at the Ivory hotel which was really nice - we were worried about the hotel as when looking on booking.com/Hostelworld/Agoda all the places seemed to have really low reviews. We also asked other people and they said the accommodation on Phi Phi wasn’t great. However we were pleasantly surprised that our place was pretty nice, quiet and clean. The price was expensive for what it was though - but you should expect that in Phi Phi...everywhere is expensive!

The day we arrived we booked a 4 hour sunrise speed boat island tour including Maya Bay (1000THB pp) then trekked up to the Phi Phi viewpoint (30THB pp entry fee) for some stunning views of the island. We got soaked walking back to the hotel then chilled for the evening. Unfortunately I felt sick again so skipped dinner and had an early night, Molly did a solo street food run. I was up all night with diarrhoea so had to skip the sunrise tour (I was gutted) but Mol went and said it was incredible!

The day didn’t start off too great though as Molly dropped my phone and smashed screen to pieces before getting on the boat! Her speedboat left the pier at 6:30am and headed to Maya Bay, where they spent two hours relaxing and taking photos. It was relatively quiet when she arrived but completely packed after about 20 minutes. The boat then headed to a Lagoon in the middle of a bay of limestone cliffs for a swim for about 20 minutes before heading to the Viking Cave - tourists are no longer allowed in to the cave due to people trying to steal spit nests created by (name of Bird) which are worth lots of money, so they just slowly drove past and then on to a snorkelling spot. Mol saw some beautiful fish but missed out on sharks even though everyone else on the boat saw them! The last stop was Monkey Beach for about 15 minutes, where they fed pineapple to the monkeys before heading back to the pier around 10:30.

By this time I had slept off the illness and was feeling 10x better so we checked out, left our bags at the hotel and headed to Loh Dalum beach for a couple of hours in the sun before our ferry to Phuket.

The weather was amazing so sat on the top deck of the boat and tanned for 2 hours on route to Phuket. The ferry cost 250THB pp but we booked this with our tickets to Phi Phi from Lanta, which worked out cheaper! We arrived at Phuket mid afternoon and got a shared mini bus(100THB pp - cheaper to purchase when you arrive rather than a boat transfer) to Fulfill hostel in Phuket town. We checked in, dropped our bags off then headed out to a department store to get my phone screen replaced (1800 THB) before hitting a pizza place for dinner. The next day we walked to Asia Express gym (https://mollyben98.wixsite.com/picturepassport/single-post/2018/01/11/Gym-session-number%E2%9C%8C%F0%9F%8F%BC) then got the local bus to Kata Beach (40THB each) to our next hostel - Sino Hostel. Kata is absolutely packed with Russian people - more Russians than Thai! It hammered it down with rain that evening so chilled in the hostel, had some drinks with a group of newly made friends then all headed to the night market for food, which was more expensive than night markets in other areas we’d been to. After filling up on fresh seafood we all headed back to the hostel and played drinking games till about 2am. We woke up to boiling hot sun so spent the day at the beach, both picking up some good colour. After a few hours of lying in the sun and sea dips to cool off we walked into Kata town and watched people at the surf bar (artificial surf machine) and got lunch from 7/11, then back to our spot on the beach. That evening we went to a local restaurant for dinner (which was the same price as the night market) then chilled in the hostel.

(Big Buddha)
Day three was another glorious day so we hired a moped (250THB/24 hours) to explore the island. We visited the Big Buddha first, where Molly and I were blessed by monks, then Wat Chalong Temple and on to Surin Beach. We stopped at a 7/11 on route for our customary lunch then hit Kamala, Patong and Karon beach before heading back to catch the sunset at Kata beach with a beer (me) and a smoothie (Mol).

That evening we went back to the night market for dinner and shared a whole red snapper with sides for 300THB - it was delicious! Met some cool guys from the UK, Canada and U.S so had some drinks with them then headed out for a couple more and played pool.

We checked out the next morning and got the local bus back to Phuket town to head towards the airport - unfortunately 30 mins into the journey Molly realised she’d left her phone at the hostel so we went back to Fulfill in town, they kindly let Molly hang out there with our bags while I went on a 1 hour round trip on a moped back to Kata to get her phone (hired moped for 1.5 hours for 110THB). Back in Phuket town we walked to the bus terminal to get another local bus to Phuket airport (100THB pp) as we had a hostel nearby for the night before our 11:30am flight to Chiang Mai the next day (Total: £95 including baggage).
