Tubing | Vang Vieng

The bus journey from Luang Probang was horrendous! There were points during the journey that the driver couldn’t see more than two feet in front of him through the fog/cloud. Having said that we safely made it to our hotel (Laos Haven & Spa), dumped our bags then headed out for lunch. Following a feed we hired mopeds (for twice the price of Thailand) and drove out to the Emerald Pool, which was packed with Chinese tourists. We walked through the beautiful and ginormous caves then jumped off a 10m tree into the pool.

We wandered the streets of Vang Vieng in search of the top restaurants on trip advisor that night, the first was closed for renovation, the second was closed on Tuesdays (thanks for the heads up Trip Advisor) so we ended up in Gary’s Irish bar - all ordering pies & burgers that were amazing! We stuck around for a drink and played killer pool with 10 other people, which I won!

The next day we embarked on the one thing everyone does in Vang Vieng - tubing. It cost 120,000 LAK pp, incl. 60,000 deposit and set off along the river. A few years ago tubing was considered quite dangerous and people would die on a weekly basis being too drunk/on drugs in the river. All 15 bars used to be open but now they only open two per day to try to limit the casualties. We had a brilliant day, got absolutely smashed on Laos Whiskey, lost flip flops & sunglasses, woke up covered in bruises and very little recollection of the day/night. We did apparently eat at Gary’s and I do recall eating a delicious cottage pie at some point!

Harvey also claims he nearly won killer pool but no one else can remember. Our alarms went off at 8am the next day for our minibus to Vientiane for our final stop in Laos before heading to Vietnam. We stayed at Vientiane Golden Sun Hotel (£26 per night) - it was a nice hotel with huge rooms in the centre of the city. We spent most of the day relaxing in the room before heading out for dinner at Pizza da Romy (number one on trip advisor) then went to bed, leaving for our flight the next day at 12.
